The spectacular canyons of the south
On the long route from the cities to the Sahara Desert, Morocco hides some of its most spectacular natural landscapes: the Todra and Dades gorges. At Esplora il Marocco we often include them in our itineraries, because these deep canyons carved into the rock offer breathtaking views that leave every traveller speechless.
Lying at the foot of the High Atlas, the two gorges are ideal stops on the way to Merzouga and break up the long drive with their natural beauty. Between towering rock walls, green palm groves and traditional Berber villages, they reveal a side of Morocco made of pure, surprising nature. In this guide we tell you what to expect. Our 4-day desert tour from Marrakech passes through these gorges of southern Morocco.
The Todra Gorge
The Todra Gorge, near the town of Tinghir, is without doubt the more famous and dramatic of the two. Here rock walls that rise above 150 metres in places close in to form a corridor only a few tens of metres wide, with a crystal-clear stream running through it. Walking along the floor of the gorge, with the walls soaring towards the sky, is a powerful experience.
The narrowest and most spectacular section is easy to walk for everyone, and it is a favourite with climbers, who come from all over the world to scale its sheer walls. The atmosphere, between rock and water, is cool and evocative. Our 3-day tour from Fes to Marrakech includes a visit to the Todra Gorge.
The Dades Gorge
The Dades Gorge, not far away, offers a different but equally fascinating setting. The Dades Valley is famous for its curious rock formations, such as the well-known “monkey fingers”, and for its winding road that climbs in tight hairpin bends, with spectacular views at every turn.
The valley is dotted with ancient mud-brick kasbahs, lush palm groves and traditional Berber villages, in a harmonious landscape that combines nature and tradition. Driving the Dades road, with its famous zigzag bends, is an unforgettable scenic experience, especially in the warm light of sunset on the rock walls. Our 4-day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga includes the scenery of the Dades Valley.
The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs
Both gorges lie along the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, one of the most scenic routes in Morocco. It links several fertile valleys and crosses a landscape dotted with ancient earthen fortresses, the kasbahs, which once controlled the caravan routes and today tell the story of the region.
All along the road you pass palm groves, traditional mud-brick villages and spectacular views, in a constant alternation of green and rock, of nature and ancient architecture. It is a journey within the journey, making the road to the desert as fascinating as the destination itself.
Berber villages and nature
The Todra and Dades valleys are home to Berber communities who still live according to ancient traditions, carefully farming the palm groves and small fields along the rivers. Meeting these communities, seeing their mud-brick villages and learning about their way of life adds a human and cultural dimension to the experience.
The region also offers plenty of opportunities for walks and hikes, through palm groves, gorges and authentic villages. This combination of spectacular nature and Berber culture makes these valleys a very complete travel experience.
When and how to visit
The Todra and Dades gorges are usually visited on the route from Marrakech or Ouarzazate to the Merzouga desert, as stops on a multi-day tour. Their location makes them a natural stop that enriches the itinerary and breaks up the long distances with unforgettable scenery.
