DAY 2: EXPLORING MERZOUGA – NOMADS – KHAMLIA (GNAOUA VILLAGE) – MERZOUGA LAKE – ERG CHEBBI – PALM GROVE (2 hours’ drive)
After breakfast, we will spend the day exploring the Merzouga desert (Erg Chebbi). The area offers sand dunes, a seasonal wild lake, fossil sites, small mines and splendid oases, ideal for light outdoor activities.
We will start with an off-road drive to an ancient kohl mine (the traditional eyeliner), then visit the nomads in their woven tents and learn about their way of life over a cup of Berber tea. We will then continue to Khamlia to enjoy Gnaoua music and dance; many of the inhabitants have roots in Mali, Sudan and Niger. Free time for lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon we will walk in a palm grove and drive a few kilometres to the wild lake of Merzouga (often called the flamingo lake).
Afterwards, you will climb onto the camels to cross the dunes, stopping on a high dune for the sunset, then continue to the luxury camp. Enjoy the music of Berber drums around the fire under a sky full of stars. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
DAY 3: MERZOUGA SAHARA – RISSANI – ERFOUD – TODRA GORGE – DADES VALLEY (5 hours’ drive)
After breakfast, we will leave the desert to visit the town of Rissani, the ancient capital of Tafilalet. Rissani is still an important trading centre for the region today, with a large souk held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
After a stroll through the Rissani souk, we will continue to Erfoud, where we will visit one of the fossil marble workshops. We will then drive through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad to reach the Todra Gorge. The course of the Todra river has carved a large canyon through the mountains, creating a gorge with high walls of red rock. These gorges are an ideal place for climbers. Feel free to walk through the gorges and admire the beauty of the landscape. Free time for lunch at a restaurant. We will then continue to the Dades Valley, passing through Boumalne Dades. Must-see stops at the “monkey fingers” rock formations and at a mountain-top spot overlooking the Dades Valley. Finally, dinner and overnight at the hotel.
DAY 4: DADES VALLEY – VALLEY OF ROSES – SKOURA PALM GROVES – OUARZAZATE – KASBAH OF AIT BEN HADDOU – HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS – MARRAKECH (5.5 hours’ drive)
On the last day of your 4-day desert tour, we will continue the journey to Kalaa Mgouna to visit the Valley of Roses. Every year in May a Rose Festival is held here, where the locals offer their rose products: from perfumes to rose water, from oil to cosmetics. We will then drive through the palm groves of Skoura. Next, we will reach Ouarzazate, also known as the gateway to the desert. We will visit the studios where famous films have been shot.
We will then set off to visit the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Kasbah has appeared in many films, including Gladiator, Alexander, The Mummy and others, and in TV series such as Game of Thrones. We will then continue to Marrakech, crossing the Tizi-n-Tichka pass and the spectacular High Atlas mountains. We will stop for lunch and to take photos at the most scenic spots. Finally, we will reach Marrakech, with drop-off at the airport or your accommodation. End of the tour.
